How Does Social Media Impact Your Mental Health?
What factors might influence whether Facebook has negative influences, like links with depression, versus positive results, such as boosts in self-esteem?
There is a lot someone can do on Facebook, good or bad, and those things can really impact people.
Some negative influences are:
- Cyberbullying: it can be a platform for cyberbullying, harassment, and hate speech, and those things can lead to depression and even in some cases suicide.
- Fake New: people can spread false information and that can have real world consequences.
- Social Comparison: people can compare their followers and likes to another, and that will just lead to jealousy and low self esteem.
- Addiction: people can be really addicted to social media to the point where they become reliant on it.
Some positive influences are:
- Social Connection: you can make new friends or connect with current friends and family
- Fanbase: some times you can grow your following and there are lots of people supporting you and hyping you up.
- Support Community: there are people out their who are willing to listen to yo vent and help you.
Do social networking sites have any responsibility in promoting mental health in their users? If so, how might they go about doing so?
Yes, I think they have a responsibility to their users to promote mental health. Social media has so many influences and they can really impact the users mental health, and they should take action to prioritize their well being.
Some things they can do:
